If you provide a couple of unique products/service and the process of selling/promoting these is different then this is where additional prospect types are useful.
You can define a broad set of statuses which any prospect type can exist at. That is, you don't need to create a status of "Proposal Sent" for every prospect type.
This is where you define your sales process for each prospect type. A progression allow a prospect to go from status A to status B and trigger some special behaviours.
To customize the "gut feel" options that your sales users choose for each prospect.
